Slovakia 1-2 Ukraine: Comeback Win Keeps Euro 2024 Hopes Alive
Ukraine's Second-Half Surge Secures Victory
Shaparenko and Yaremchuk Goals Fuel Resurgence
In a thrilling encounter at the Slovakia National Football Stadium, Ukraine overcame a 1-0 deficit to secure a 2-1 victory over Slovakia, keeping their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of Euro 2024 alive. Goals from Mykola Shaparenko and Roman Yaremchuk in the second half proved decisive, giving Ukraine their first win in Group C.
Slovakia took the lead in the 20th minute through a penalty converted by Erik Jirka. However, Ukraine's resilience shone through as Shaparenko equalized with a stunning strike from outside the box just before the hour mark. The winning goal came in the 79th minute, with Yaremchuk heading home a cross from Oleksandr Zinchenko.
The result was a significant boost for Ukraine, who had lost their opening match against England. They now face Bosnia and Herzegovina in their final group match, needing at least a draw to qualify for the knockout round. Slovakia, meanwhile, will have to beat England in their last match to have any chance of advancing.
