Díaz Blows Another Save As Mets Fall To D-Backs
Mets Lose Heartbreaker In Arizona
New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz blew his second save in as many nights as the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for a 5-4 victory on Tuesday.
The Mets had taken a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth inning on a Pete Alonso home run, but Díaz allowed a leadoff single to Ketel Marte and a game-tying double to Carson Kelly.
After a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Jake McCarthy hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Kelly with the winning run.
The loss dropped the Mets to 43-43 on the season, while the Diamondbacks improved to 39-48.
Díaz's Struggles Continue
Díaz has now blown four saves in his last 10 appearances, and his ERA has risen to 4.40.
The Mets have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this season, and Díaz's struggles have been a major factor.
The closer has been one of the most dominant relievers in baseball over the past few seasons, but he has not been the same pitcher in 2022.
Mets Offense Comes Up Short
The Mets offense did its part on Tuesday, scoring four runs on nine hits.
Alonso's home run was his 25th of the season, and he also drove in two other runs.
But the Mets were unable to add to their lead in the ninth inning, and Díaz was unable to hold the lead.
Looking Ahead
The Mets will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they face the Diamondbacks in the second game of their three-game series.
Taijuan Walker will start for the Mets, while Merrill Kelly will start for the Diamondbacks.
The Mets will need to win the series if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive.
