Error Costly as D-backs Fall in Walk-Off Loss
Inconsistent Defense Proves Detrimental in Series Opener Against Giants
The Arizona Diamondbacks' porous defense reared its ugly head again on Tuesday night, as they fell to the San Francisco Giants in a 9-8 walk-off loss. The D-backs, who have now lost three straight games, committed a pair of errors that proved costly in the contest.
Defensive Meltdown Leads to Giants Victory
The first error came in the bottom of the fourth inning, when second baseman Ketel Marte misplayed a ground ball off the bat of Austin Slater. The miscue allowed runners to reach first and second, and they would later score on a single by Brandon Crawford to give the Giants a 2-0 lead.
The second error came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when left fielder David Peralta dropped a fly ball off the bat of LaMonte Wade Jr. The error allowed Wade to reach base, and he would later score on a sacrifice fly to give the Giants a 3-2 lead.
The D-backs' defense has been a major issue all season long, as they have committed the second-most errors in the National League. Their defensive woes have led to a number of losses, and they will need to clean things up if they want to start winning games.
Offensive Fireworks Not Enough to Overcome Giants' Defense
Despite their defensive struggles, the D-backs offense put up a valiant effort on Tuesday night. They scored eight runs on 11 hits, including a pair of home runs from Christian Walker and Carson Kelly.
However, the Giants' offense was simply too much for the D-backs to overcome. San Francisco scored nine runs on 12 hits, including a pair of home runs from Mike Yastrzemski and Wilmer Flores.
The D-backs will look to bounce back from their loss on Wednesday night, when they face the Giants in the second game of their three-game series.
